OSSEOUS SURGERYPeople with periodontal disease may develop holes, or defects, in the bone around their teeth. Osseous surgery is performed to reshape the bone to get rid of the defects. This procedure is often used to treat bone loss around multiple teeth.
FLAP SURGERYAs a second or third line treatment option, flap surgery may be performed to reduce swelling and the size of pockets. During this surgery, the gums are folded back away from the tooth so that the plaque and tartar can be removed. Finally, the tissue is sewn back into place so it fits tightly around the tooth.
BONE AND TISSUE GRAFTSBone and tissue grafting is performed when the gums or the bone supporting the teeth have been damaged. Grafting stimulates new growth of bone and gum tissue. There are various ways to regenerate gum tissue including a treatment where tissue is removed from the palate and transplated to the damaged site/s. It helps limit further gum recession and covers exposed roots, which protects them from decay. Grafts can also be used the same way to regenerate bone. |
